Harrogate Advertiser Layout and Story Analysis

At the very top of the front page is the masthead. The masthead is written in a royal blue, rectangle box. They have used royal blue as it conservative and a neutral. “Harrogate Advertiser” is written in two different fonts; however, both are serif and in white. “Harrogate” is written in bold, where as “advertiser” is written in italics. They have used different fonts to make them standout. “Harrogate” is the area the newspaper is representing and therefore is important. “Advertiser” suggests that the papers are advertising the area, as well as good and services. In the masthead box there is a small subtitle above the main masthead, “Voice of the town since 1836”.  This makes the papers feel like a tradition in the town, and as it has been running so long people feel it is reliable.
Positioned under the masthead coloured box is the Date, on the left side of the page. The website, in the centre of the page, and the price, on the right of the page. All this text is written in a sans serif, black font. There is then a thin line running horizontally across the page.
2 adverts (puffs) are under this line, both advertising features in the paper. Each advert takes up half a horizontal side of the paper. Both boxes have a blue outline and both the titles for each feature are in a blue, sans serif font. The titles are positioned to the left of the box, and in the right bottom corner is the page number, which is in a smaller, black, serif font, with a white outline. The adverts both have pictures in of people in the community at a certain event. They have used pictures of groups/crowds of people because it makes the paper feel part of the community. Also, if someone sees the papers, and it has someone they know on it they would be more encouraged to buy it.
Underneath the puffs is the splash. The main image of the headline is on the right of the page. The puff’s edge and the image edge match up which makes the paper aseptically pleasing. The images are in colour to draw people in. When the paper is folded the some of the image folds on the underside of the page, this is to make people pick up the paper and look at the rest of the fount page. Under the photo is a caption explain what is in the picture, it is used to explain the picture, and give more background detail.
On the left of the page is the head line. It is in the same font as the “Harrogate” in the masthead. It is in a black serif font. The headline is in a lot of white space, and the black font to make it stand out in the page. They have used the same font to create cohesion.
Under the headline is the story. It separated into 4 columns. At the top of the first column on the left is an “Exclusive” bar. It is a blue rectangle box, which exclusive written in a white sans serif font, and every letter is in capitals. This is used to show the story is exclusive to the paper, and they have the sole right to publish the story. Under this is the byline, written in a bold, sans serif font. This is used to show who the story is written by, and if the reader likes that journalist they are more likely to buy the paper. There is then a thin black line under the byline, then the reporters email address. The story is written in a black serif font. The first word is written in capitals to draw the reader’s attention to it, “RADICAL” is this stories first word. As it powerful adjective and its definition is breaking the rules, it instantly catches the reader’s attention as they want to know what/who is being radical. The story is written in a small font so the editor can fit more stories on a page.
Under the picture on the left side of the page is a Kicker, which overlaps the centre line of the paper, this tops the paper looks too formal. It is highlighted in a pink box, behind the story. The headline is in a sans serif font. The story has 5 columns but they are broken up with a picture in the top left of the box, with a captions underneath, and the bar code and recycling box overlapping at the bottom left of the box. The font is the same in the splash story, and the first word “A CONTROVERSIAL” is again in capitals to draw the audience attention to it, it is an emotive word and makes people want to find out what is controversial.
Over lapping the kicker story is the bar code and recycling box. This is in a white box, which is surrounded with a thin black line. At the top of the box is the recycling logo, the newspaper have put this on the paper so the audience who are concerned about the environment are more feel more assured to buy the paper. Then is the price again, and the barcode, which are both legal requirements.
There is another story to the right of the page; this story does not have an image. Its starting word is “A NATIONAL”, again in capital letters. This word makes people wont to read the paper as it is Large Scale, and concerns everyone. The font is the same as in the kicker.
There is then another thin line along the bottom of all the stories. Underneath this is an advert. This advert covers the whole width of the paper, and is printed in colour. This makes it stand out.
At the very bottom of the page are 20 coloured dots, they are split into 4 groups of 5. These are used whilst printing the newspaper.
