Ripon Gazette Page 2 Semiotic Analysis

There are three main stories on page 2 in the Ripon Gazette. These stories are all positive and are all very different; this is to allow the paper to appeal to a wide audience. The top story has two images, one is computer generate, this is to show the audience the developing plans, but also makes the page more interesting as it is something different. Another main story has two images; both of these are of people. This show the paper is in touch with the audience and community, people may also be more likely to buy the paper if they know the person who is in the image. The other story also has a picture of a man, but flying a helicopter. This image has been used as people who are interested in the air force and flying will be intrigued to this story.

Images are used in the page as they break up the text and make the page easy on the eye. They are also used to draw people in, as someone may be interested in the image, and therefore will read the story.

Along the left side of the page is the news digest column. This is used for stories that are not main news, but are still important to the community. They also make the page look fuller, which make the buyer of the paper feel they are getting more for their money.

At the bottom left of the page is a box telling the audience what is in next week’s newspaper. This is done to make the reader want to buy the paper next week. The box is the same colour as the masthead on the front page. This brings cohesion though the paper, and also makes it stand out from the page. The colour also breaks up the page.

There are two adverts on the page. These are both colourful and bright, making them standout and also making the page not look as dull. Both images use different fonts from the newspaper making them look more interesting.

At the very top of the page is the date, and page number. This is there so people are easily able to find the page they want, and is also used to keep the newspaper in order.

All the stories fit on one page, this is done to if people loose, or take out a page it doesn’t ruin a story, as well as making the paper easier to print and write.

Each story is broken up with a thin mine, which to not join, this stops the page being busy and keeps the stories separate, simple and clean cut. The top story is surrounded with a bold line, this makes it standout. This is done because the story is important, but it also helps breaking up the page.

Each image has a caption which explains it. This is done to keep the images easy to understand and helps the reader.

At the top of the page is a box showing what inside the newspaper this week, this is to show people what is in the paper, it also sells the newspaper, as before buy the newspaper people may look on the second page to see what they are buy, and they will see this. The box  could also be used as a content page, as it shows what stories are on certain pages, For example, Letters is on page 1 to 12.  There are also images in the box; this is making the page more appealing. Out of the 7 photos 5 of them have images of people in. The images of people show used to show that the paper is part of the community. This box is in the same colour as the masthead, this keep cohesion throughout the paper.

Along the side of the paper is the News Digest. These are stories that are not worth a lot of space but are important to the community. They also make the page seem fuller, which make the buyer feel like they are getting a lot for their money.

Each stories text is in the in the same font and text size, however the titles are in the same font but in different sizes and some are bold. This is done to keep the page consistent but also making it more appealing as there is more for the eye to look at with different size titles. Each story is separates with thin lines, which do not join up to keep the page flowing, but easy to read.

One story is in a grey box, this makes it standout and show that the story is different from the others. This also make the page interesting as it breaks up the white black and white space.

Newspaper Front Page Semiotic Analysis

The name of the paper is at the top of the page so people instantly know that it’s the “Harrogate Advertiser”. The masthead is in a colour to make it stand out. Harrogate advertiser is in blue because it is a conservative, neutral colour and is not offensive to many people. The Ripon Gazette’s masthead is green, this may be due to Ripon being quite a rural place, and could represent the green grass in the country. Green is also a neutral colour. Above the newspapers name is a subtitle, this is used to show that the newspaper is traditional and withstanding and therefore a reliable source of the news.

The date, website and price are near the top of the page so people can easily see when the newspaper was printed and what the price is. The website is important as the newspaper is reminding people that they have a website and that it is important.

The two puffs are used to advertise things in the paper to the audience. They are at the top of the page so people read them and want to buy it.

The front page often has 1 main headlining story, and then 2 big, but not as important stories, then a few little ones to fill up the space. The most interesting story is often the main one, and a story that is likely to affect the community or a shock story. The stories on the front page are often stories that the whole community will be interested in.

On the left side of the page, above the bottom advert is the barcode, and recycling sign. The bar code has to be on the front of the page, and the recycling sign is important as people who are concerned about the environment are more likely to want to buy the newspaper.

The large advert at the bottom of the page is used to sell an outside product to the audience. The advert is often eye-catching and bright coloured to draw people’s attention to it. This advert is a way for the newspaper to make money as they are selling advertising space.

The pictures on the page are mostly of people, this is to make people want to buy the newspaper as it show it really represent the community. Each picture has a caption underneath it explaining the image, this make the newspaper and image easier to understand.

All the story text on the page is the same font and size. The story titles are in the same font, but different sizes according to the importance of the story. At the end of most stories is a bullet points, and then text asking what the reader thought about the story. This is done so the reader think more about the story, and if they have a strong opinion they may write into the paper, and write on the newspapers website.

Each story is separated with a thin line around it, these lines to not join up though, this makes the paper easier to read as the reader can see the definition between different stories, but as they are not joined it keep the flow of the page.

Edited Story Idea - Harrogate Hospital Car park expantion

HARROGATE Hospital is also building a two-storey car park as well as the new cancer centre.

Harrogate Committee made the decision about the two-storey car park, after debating the effect it would have on local residents and visitors to the hospital. It was passed by 11 votes to two, with two abstentions.

Philip Hopper, whose home is on Lancaster Park Road, and overlooks the hospital, commented "Lancaster Road is always busy. The local bus even stopped as it could not get through all the traffic." He feels that the council should focus on making the hospital more accessible from the road, rather than making more parking spaces.

The council assured local residents that the two-storey car park was the best plan out of 16.

A spokesman for the council said they are creating a travel route around the hospital, which would encourage staff, patients and visitors to walk, cycle or use public transport to access the hospital and hopefully reduce the traffic on Lancaster Park Road.

"The hospital has always been in need of more parking spaces. The parking facilities at the moment are not adequate for the number of visitors the hospital has, and the staff parking is always full to capacity." commented Dr.Potter, 42, a surgeon at Harrogate Hospital. "The additional car park is being welcomed by both staff and hospital visitors alike, and should reduce the stress created by the current parking."

Story Ideas - Harrogate’s Indian Summer

HARROGATE has experienced a true Indian summer, with temperatures soaring up to 25 degrees.

Bars and pub happily welcomed the heat wave as many of us have been splashing out on refreshing drinks in the sun.

The stay has been full all weekend, with the young and old enjoying the last sun off the year.

Families enjoyed Valley Gardens, taking use of the park, games and boating pond in Valley Gardens. Ripley Ice Cream based in Valley Gardens was taken aback by the sudden heat wave, and ran out of ice cream on Saturday afternoon, but were soon back in business by a speedy delivery from the shop in Ripley.

It also seems we have been pulling out our rusty barbeques and enjoying the last of this year’s sun.

Local butcher Jim Paxton,52, commented, "This weekend has to be the busiest we have every had in September! Everyone was planning on having a barbeque."

However the weather has not been a nice break for all of us. The hospitals have been full of patients suffering from heat stroke and severe sunburn. Local Nurse Mary Benwell said "Many people have underestimated the strength of the sun this weekend, and have had to be treated medically."

Unfortunately, the unseasonal weather is due to end on Monday, with temperatures suddenly dropping to a more normal 14

Story Idea - Harrogate to hold world conker championship.

Local conker fanatic Beth Royal is organising the world conker championships, held in Brakenfeild sports field tomorrow.

She has teamed up with local businesses that are providing hampers, food for the events and prizes varying from wine and food hampers, medals and a cup for the victorious conkerer!

The competition is free to enter; contestants must bring their own conkers, which will be checked for tampering. The event holders will provide regulation string.  The play will be based on a knock-out basis, so there is hope for event numbers.

There is a barbecue being provided, and there will be face painting for younger competitors.
